Preparation Periods

Every PreK-8 teacher is entitled to one 45-minute preparation period daily. Preparation periods are unassigned periods to be used for professional work. A teacher may decide to use preparation periods to write lessons, grade papers, analyze student data, meet with parents, students or colleagues or other professional responsibilities. First year teachers and second year teachers that are being mentored may have two preparation periods per week designated for professional support.

Please note that two preps a year can be missed without compensation, one in the fall and one in the spring.

If your prep takes place while you are on a trip, it will not be compensated.

Professional Activity Periods

PreK-6 teachers will also receive one additional professional activity period per week. Teachers of grades 7-8 are entitled to one professional activity period per day. Your professional activity period is the time for professional activities such as:

  • Performing student assessment activities (including portfolios, performance tests, IEPs, running records, etc.)
  • Professional development activities (including workshops, attend demonstration lessons, meeting with coach/consultants)
  • Common planning time
  • Curriculum preparation

In lieu of a regularly assigned professional or administrative activity, occasional meetings will be scheduled during the professional activity period during the school year, such as IEP meetings. These professional periods will determined by the circular 6.
