Dual Language: The dual language program gives equal time for instruction in Spanish and English based upon a 5-day language cycle. Grades K through 5 follow a 5-day total immersion model alternating Spanish and English. The classes contain approximately an equal mix of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers. In grades 6 through 8, the language of instruction will switch approximately by half-day and most teachers will teach their subject area in both languages.
Balanced Literacy: In kindergarten through grade 5, we utilize a comprehensive approach to Balanced Literacy. Balanced Literacy stresses the essential dimensions of reading through explicit teaching of phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency and expressiveness, vocabulary, and comprehension. Daily read-alouds, independent reading time, reading workshop, writing workshop, and systematic word study instruction are key features of the approach. The daily structure includes a 90 minute block (read aloud, shared reading, word study, daily guided reading, independent reading/writing). K-2 will utilize Heggerty, Wilson: Fundations, and Estrellita to support students’ phonemic awareness and phonics every day, depending on the language of instruction.
In middle school, teachers continue to use the structures and components of Balanced Literacy. Though the emphasis shifts from learning to read to reading to learn, students in middle school continue to refine, advance, and apply their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to build knowledge about new subject matter. The curriculum will also be culturally responsive to all members of our school community.
Core Curriculum materials utilized to support literacy instruction are Wit & Widsom for grades K-8.
